This was such a heart-breaking story!! Loved it!
Here is what A List Of Cages is about:
When Adam Blake lands the best elective ever in his senior year, serving as an aide to the school psychologist, he thinks he's got it made. Sure, it means a lot of sitting around, which isn't easy for a guy with ADHD, but he can't complain, since he gets to spend the period texting his friends. Then the doctor asks him to track down a troubled freshman who keeps dodging her, and Adam discovers that boy is Julian - the foster brother he hasn't seen in five years.
Adam is ecstatic to be reunited. At first, Julian seems like the boy he once knew. He is still kindhearted. He still writes stories and loves picture books meant for little kids. But as they spend more time together, like where he hides during the middle of the day, and what's really going on inside his house. Adam is determined to help him, but his involvement could cost both boys their lives.
There were a few things I didn't like about this book, probably more than I have for praise. But I have to say, I did enjoy it and that's why I gave it a higher rating than what I should of.
To start of with, from the synopsis you are told that Adam has ADHD but I feel Roe did not represent this very well in the story. Sure there are some scenes throughout the story that you could tell that Adam has it but for the most part he acted like a normal teenage boy. Sure he takes things for his ADHD but I have a brother who has this, and even when he is on his medication you can still tell he has it by the way he acts. This was probably the biggest problem I had with Roe's writing.
Another thing I didn't like was the pacing. The writing is so fast. There were some parts where the pacing was spot-on, but for most of the book Roe's pacing with her writing was quick. This is a heads-up for anyone who is thinking about picking up this book! For a 300 page book, it covered a long time period.
On a high note, and as mentioned before, I did really enjoy this story, especially the ending. It kept me entertained, allowing me to finish it in a day. So if you are looking for a quick read I recommend picking this book up.
I did end up rating this book 4 out of 5 stars, totally worth it!!
Happy reading.
